Film La Bola Negra

At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, a soldier conscripted into the fascist army is entranced by a prisoner of war. In pre-dictatorship Spain, an affluent young man finds himself blackballed from his father's club due to rumors about his sexuality. And, decades after the dictatorship ends, a young gay historian explores his unique family history. An homage to Federico García Lorca, the Spanish poet, playwright, and director, La Bola Negra explores what it means to be gay throughout different eras, focusing on three generations of men whose lives are connected through themes of sexuality, desire, pain, and inheritance. Winner of Best Director at Cannes and the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, La Bola Negra is, "rife with ingenious and technical marvels and sequences that rank among cinema’s best while also telling a very classical story about honoring those who’ve come before us, making space for the stories of those we may never meet, and acting as a celebration of those who never gave up on their love even when it was punishable by death."—Zachary Lee, TheWrap. In Spanish with English subtitles. This film is eligible for the Youth Arts Access Fund. Call the Box Office at 207.873.7000 to obtain YAAF tickets. Pay it forward! Donate to YAAF here.
