What Downeast Maine Actually Means
Downeast Maine starts roughly at Ellsworth and stretches to the Canadian border โ Hancock and Washington counties. It's the least populated coastal stretch in the eastern U.S., and it feels like it. This is Maine at its most raw: bold coastline, working waterfronts, blueberry barrens, and communities where everyone knows each other. If you're moving here, you're choosing authenticity over convenience.
The Gateway: Ellsworth
Ellsworth is the commercial hub of the Downeast region. It's where you'll find Walmart, Home Depot, Hannaford, and most of the services that the surrounding towns don't have. Route 1 and Route 3 converge here, making it the crossroads for anyone heading to Bar Harbor, Acadia, or points further Downeast. If you want Downeast living with actual shopping access, Ellsworth is the pragmatic choice.
Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island
Bar Harbor is a tourist town โ beautiful, walkable, and packed from June through October. Living here year-round means dealing with seasonal extremes: summer crowds and winter quiet. Many restaurants and shops close November through April. Housing is expensive for the area, and much of the available rental stock gets pulled into Airbnb. But if you love Acadia National Park and don't mind the rhythm of a resort town, it's hard to beat the setting. See our Bar Harbor town guide for details.
Further Downeast
Towns like Machias, Jonesport, Lubec, and Eastport are deeply rural and deeply affordable. Machias has the University of Maine campus and a small downtown. Lubec is the easternmost town in the U.S. Eastport has been attracting artists and remote workers drawn by cheap real estate and dramatic scenery. But services are sparse โ you might drive 45 minutes to a grocery store, and the nearest hospital could be an hour away.
Jobs and Economy
The traditional economy here runs on lobstering, blueberries, and forestry. Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor is a major biomedical research employer. Healthcare jobs at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth are steady. Tourism drives the summer economy. Remote work is the biggest game-changer โ if you can work from anywhere, Downeast real estate prices let you live well on less.
The Real Talk
- Internet: Spotty outside of Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. Check coverage before you buy. Starlink has been a lifeline for many rural Downeast residents.
- Healthcare: Limited options. Specialists often require trips to Bangor (1+ hour from Ellsworth).
- Winter: Downeast winters are harsh and isolating. Snow, ice, wind off the ocean, and long dark nights. You need to genuinely enjoy solitude.
- Community: Small and tight-knit. People help each other. But you're the newcomer โ it takes time to earn trust.
Despite the challenges, Downeast Maine has a magnetic quality. The sunrises over Cobscook Bay, the quiet of a fog-wrapped harbor, the taste of a fresh-picked wild blueberry in August โ these are the things that make people stay despite the inconveniences. It's not for everyone, but the people who choose Downeast tend to love it fiercely.
